Denise Lightning attended the Universty of Toronto - Faculty of Law and was awarded her Law Degree in 1994. During her articling year, she worked with the Crown Attorney's Office in Kapuskasing, Ontario, travelling the court circuit to the fly-in communities around James Bay. After her call to the Ontario Bar, Denise spent time with Aboriginal Legal Services before taking the position as in-house counsel with a First Nation in Ontario.

 

In 1997, Denise returned home to Maskwacis, Alberta. Here she practiced out of the office of J. Wilton Littlechild O.C., Q.C., I.P.C.

 

After being admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1999, she has since established a practice on the Four Nations Cree Territory, which serves Edmonton, Ponoka, Wetaskiwin and surrounding areas.

 

Denise has been awarded the Esquao award for Aboriginal Women in the Justice category. She is an active member of the Indigenous Bar Association, the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association, the Canadian Bar Association, and President of the Child Welfare Trial Lawyers Association.
